On Sunday evening, 20th of December 2009, an English lecture on “academic essay writing for MBA students” was successfully given by Mr. Marc Chen, a student from BI-Fudan MBA11, at Room 602, Starr Building. The Industries Department and International Student Branch of Join & Share Salon jointly organized this lecture to help tackling the common difficulties in English writing encountered by MBA students with the aim to promote their key professional qualities and sharpen their English skills for their future business life. Nearly 50 BI-Fudan MBA students, candidates for this program, along with students from other MBA programs at Fudan University have attended the lecture.
As introduced to the class, Join & Share Salon is a students and alumni association dedicated to build up an international, cross-industry networking platform where professional managers could communicate and share their experiences, as well as exchange their professional knowledge. Join & Share Salon is striving to provide with its members more quality training opportunities at all time.
The guest speaker, Mr. Marc Chen, is an expert on academic and business English writing and has extensive teaching and training experience to professionals. Born in U.K., having lived a long time in Hong Kong, engaged in various consultancy works Marc has been exposed to both Western and Chinese cultural traditions, which allowed him a global vision of business and a deep understanding of Chinese students’ English problems. Meanwhile, as a student from BI-Fudan program, his lecture was tailored to the needs of his peers, and was inserted with strong senses of business knowledge, which was welcomed warmly and enjoyed thorough by the audience
Marc presented to the audience both methodology of structuring and organizing ideas, and tips on thinking and writing processes. He concluded that successful essay is always remarked by the presenting of formality and critical or analytical thinking, and all those analytical tools and language skills could be totally useful in everyone’s workplace, as a quality writing work is always a precise reflection of one’s level of thinking logic, and is essential to communication in daily work life. Marc employed various examples and graphs to illustrate his ideas, each of which has aroused great interests of audience.
Beyond giving guidelines and advices, as an experienced trainer, Marc broke down a writing process in prewriting, drafting, revising and editing, and in each stage some specific work shall be completed. Finally, the lecture ended in a joyful and free atmosphere, while Marc Chen received a present from Join & Share Salon. Many MBA students also said they had benefited significantly from both the practical contents of this wonder lecture and the active interaction between guest speaker and audience, as well as expressed their expectation on the next Join & Share lecture.
