Norway Day at Fudan University

Thursday, April 16th, BI Norwegian School of Management and their graduating class in International marketing were proud to present Norway Day at FudanUniversity. In cooperation with Fudan University, Nordic Centre and with beneficial Norway EXPO 2010 on board, Chinese students were invited to spend the day surrounded by Norwegian flags while the smell of fresh waffles was the air. Some Norwegians attending even wore their “bunad” (the Norwegian traditional costume) to the event.

The aim of Norway Day was to promote Norway and create awareness about Norwegian culture and society.
Consular general Mr. Fred Nomme was the first speaker and officially kicked Norway Day off to a flying start.

After Norway Expo 2010 had presented the Norwegian pavilion it was time for a short video presentation of Norway. While the Norwegian part of the audience all felt a sting of homesickness, some of the Chinese students questioned whether or not all the images of Norway actually look like this in real life.

Through guest lectures, the students got acquainted with several aspects of Norwegian life, society and business.  However, not only Norwegian lecturers participated on Norway day. Fudan Professor Zhu Jianxin lectured on Nordic and Norwegian cinema and started off stating that Norway have lots more to proud off then just to be the country where fearless Vikings originated from. Famous movie makers like Liv Ullmann,  Ivo Caprino and Nils Gaup were presented one by another before David Wu, President of Grenland Group Asia, lectured on the differences in Norwegian and Chinese business culture.

With Norwegian music from Røyksopp and Ugress in the background the BI graduating bachelor class in International Marketing also introduced Chinese students to Norwegian fashion from Scandic, a Norwegian company that produces clothes here in Shanghai.

A presentation of Norway and Norwegian culture is not complete without Norwegian food so for lunch the students were served several Norwegian specialties including salmon. After some initial hesitation to some of the traditional Norwegian food the students seemed to be ready to pack their bags and move to Norway, or at least learn more about Norwegian food and cooking.

In the second part of the day, we organized a company fair where Norwegian companies got to reach out to Fudan students. Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Laerdal Medicine, Arwi Electronics and Becotek participated with company presentations and received CVs from Fudan students.

Altogether several hundred students participated in Norway Day and it is hereby declared as an annual event. If you missed it this year we look forward to seeing you on Norway Day 2010.
