Norway in a global world:  Globalization is a large and important theme in societal debates and will be in the years to come. Either we will or we won’t.

The effects of globalization will be noticed by us all, as an individual, as businesses and organizations, as politicians and as a nation and state.

Not just as a threat forcing us to make changes, globalization gives us exciting opportunities, if we make the correct choices in time.

BI Norwegian School of Management was commissioned by The Confederation of Norwegian Business and Industry (NHO) to develop Vision of the Future 2030, for Norway in the global world, for NHO’s yearly conference 2007.

To develop the ’visions of the future’ BI has put together an interdisciplinary team of researchers. The report is built on research-based expertise and professional expertise. The researchers themselves are responsible for the work.

Unrelated areas

The vision of the future 2030 gives you an impression of how Norway’s situation can look in four separate, unrelated areas in a globalised world in 2030. These visions are not predictions on how it’s going to be. The objective is to give perspective to the important long-term decisions which our society must make going forward.

Vision of the future 2030 describes four unrelated subject areas, in line with NHO’s yearly conference for 2007. They don’t represent globalisation in its entirety or Norway’s future.

1. Is the World flat? Driving forces and rules of the game
2. Norway in the world. New possibilities
3. The fight for brain power – part A and part B
4. Norway version 2.0 – the political control system (model of government)

Vision of the future 2030 shall inspire new thinking and give you a few ’aha’ experiences along the way. They describe the main divers, but also the possible trend breakers relevant in today’s decision making. The visions of the future can contribute to the understanding that we soon must do things differently if we want to succeed in the future.

Along the way

Visions of the future advantages are greatest in the near future where important political decisions shall take hold, and not 2020 or 2030 which is the time horizon for the visions of the future. Then, maybe we will look back to this report and enjoy ourselves, both over things that actually became a reality and those that did not.

Developers

Visions of the future 2030 is developed by professor Jørgen Randers, professor Arne Jon Isachsen, professor Guri Hjeltness, professor Rune Sørensen, associate professor Espen Andersen, associate professor Kåre Hagen, and senior lecturer Per Espen Stoknes. Audun Farbrot, as special advisor in research communication at BI Norwegian School of Management, has been project leader and responsible for editing the report.
