主 题: The Neglected Side of Leadership: Whole-Person Influences and Leader-Team Reciprocity

摘要:In this presentation, I will discuss my research interests and a whole-person perspective on leadership. While extensive research has demonstrated how leaders influence others and the role of leadership in teams, several implicit assumptions remain unchallenged: (1) leadership influence is unidirectional, with leaders shaping teams but not vice versa, and (2) leaders’ experiences and influencing factors are confined to the work domain.

 

To address these overlooked aspects of leader-team dynamics, I will present two studies. The first paper (Hu, Kim, & Lanaj, 2024) adopts a whole-person view of leadership by examining how gratitude received at home shapes leaders’ workplace behaviors. We explore the interpersonal crossover and intrapersonal spillover effects of gratitude, integrating the moral affect theory of gratitude and savoring interventions research. Specifically, we investigate how reflecting on gratitude received from family members enhances leaders’ helpfulness and empowerment toward their teams. The second paper (Hu, Chuang, & Yin, working paper) examines the bidirectional impact of team behaviors on leaders’ outward perceptions and inward responses. This study challenges the traditional top-down perspective by exploring how team dynamics shape leaders’ thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors.

 

嘉宾简介:Jia (Jasmine) Hu is a Chair Professor of Management at the School of Economics and Management and Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University. Previously, she was a tenured Full Professor of Management and Denman Scholar at Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business and received tenure at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. Her research focuses on prosocial leadership, team effectiveness, and sustainable leadership in the digital era. She has published over 30 articles in top-tier journals, including the Academy of Management Journal and Journal of Applied Psychology, with over 10,000 citations and media coverage in Forbes, The Times, and Fortune. Jasmine serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Psychology, Deputy Editor for Management and Organization Review, and is a member of multiple editorial boards. She has been recognized among the top 2% of scientists globally by Stanford University and ranked among the top 10 most productive leadership researchers in Organizational Behavior (2011–2017). Her international honors include Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Poets & Quants’ “Best 40 Under 40 Professors,” and the Academy of Management’s NLS “Mid-Career Standout Scholar”.
