摘要:Organizational wrongdoing tends to elicit strong emotional reactions from audiences, posing a challenge for organizations in effectively managing complex emotional dynamics. As a focal reference point for audiences seeking to make sense of wrongdoing, organizational reputation likely affects these emotional dynamics. This paper aims to shed light on audiences’ emotional responses by theorizing how the nature of organizational wrongdoing interacts with an organization’s established reputation to generate diverse emotional responses. We argue that cognitive appraisals of the extent and nature of wrongdoing, together with assessments of expectation violations concerning an organization’s capability and character, shape distinct emotional responses. Our paper ultimately contributes to the literature by unpacking the nuanced emotional responses elicited by wrongdoing and by considering how reputation shapes—and is shaped by—these emotions.
