Independent and Controllable Development of China’s Chip Industry

In an open class, Professor Luo Pinliang, Head of the Department of Applied Economics, Fudan University School of Management, shared his insights concerning the upgrading of China’s chip industry. After introducing some key concepts, Professor Luo suggested related enterprises to realize the upgrading either by moving up towards the higher end of the value chain, or by transitioning from traditional, labor or capital-intensive industries to more advanced, technology or knowledge-intensive industries.

Then Professor Luo pointed out that to realize independent and controllable development,  Chinese chip enterprises need to focus on three respects: reconstruction of the internal value chain; integration of the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain; and creation of an industrial ecosystem by consolidating the cross-industry liaisons and enhancing the overall competitiveness of the industrial system.

Then Ms. Cai Ping, Director of Human Resources of MediaTek and Fudan MBA alumnus of the 2013 Class, shared her observations on the semiconductor industry, in which she has been working for over 20 years. She believes that to achieve independent and controllable development, Chinese chip companies should cooperate with universities to strengthen their talent supply chain; meanwhile, they should recognize their own advantages and find their best-suited position in the supply chain so as to dig deeper.
