While "new manufacturing" is often believed to be advanced manufacturing based on smart technologies or on data acquisition and analysis technologies, Professor Rui Mingjie from Fudan University School of Management pointed out that this interpretation is somehow missing the point. He believes that the essence of new manufacturing lies in the following aspects:
1. New production process: scalable intelligent customized production supported by internet platforms, the core of which is a C2B model;
2. New organization model: decentralized production and local distribution, instead of the traditional centralized production and global distribution;
3. New core technology: an interconnected ecosystem of 5G communication, big data, and artificial intelligence and other new technologies;
4. New business model based on C2M platforms supported by smart technologies.
Professor Rui went on and proposed three strategies to promote the new manufacturing:
1. Pay equal attention to the transformation and upgrading of traditional manufacturing.
2. Put emphasis on the Dual Circulation strategy and collaborative innovation.
3. Strive to realize the cluster development of key links of the industrial chain in the new manufacturing.
