Digital Transformation of Commercial Retail Industry after the Epidemic

Many believe that the development of the retail e-commerce in China was accelerated by the SARS epidemic seventeen years ago. So where will this COVID-19 epidemic lead the commercial retail industry? Professor Jiang Qingyun from FUSM sees three potential trends.

1. The business modes will keep diversifying. Unmanned retail, community commerce and the business of convenience will need to be more consumer-oriented to become fully developed.

2. As to the technology involved, in stead of considering only the edge-cutting side and the profitability, we must better integrate it into the organizing and operating process, releasing its power as the “enabler” in the business.

3. Management is still the ultimate determinant in a successful digital transformation of a commercial retail business.
