Project :Bosch
On July 4th,2014, Fudan Bosch iLab team visited Bosch’s headquarters in Suzhou with their mentor Professor Zhang to deliver their report on the Comfort on Demand project that started over half a year ago.
The project consists of two different stages. The first is the data collection and survey stage where the team collected a total of 565 surveys from both online and on-site sources. The data is then analyzed to identify potential end users’ needs, wants, expectations and limitations. The information gathered is then relayed back to Bosch during the mid-term report where the team gathered Bosch’s feedback on the findings and to realign the second stage of the project of coming up with business models using the Osterwalder’s model. Under the guidance of professor Zhang, the team then went on to create three different business models with different emphases to present to Bosch.  The final presentation was a success and Bosch was very satisfied with the results and recommendations that they can use to further their project in the near future.
Throughout the entire project, the iLab team displayed professionalism, dedication, and teamwork to come together on a common goal. This experience has been invaluable in letting each team member understand their short-comings as well as provide great opportunity to learn from the client and each other. Nothing else can compete with the pride and joy of completing such a challenging and fun project.

Project: IBM Smart City

On July 3, the Fudan-IBM Smart City iLab project completed their project with the delivery of their final report at the IBM-Shanghai office at the Zhangjiang High Technology Park.

"After months of hard work and preparation for this day, we're happy to achieve it," said Windy Zhang, the team leader of the project. Others in the group expressed similar sentiments.

"This was a challenging project for us, in multiple ways," said Kenji Zhu. "Not only is Smart City a difficult topic to work with, but project management becomes an issue on a project of this timescale.

说明: PIC_20140703_215152_826

Smart City is a young concept that deals with the reengineering of standard city processes to decrease costs and emissions within that city and increase its productivity and efficiency, with the end goal of improving the quality of life for its inhabitants.

"Imagine a city where everything--and I mean everything: traffic sensors, hospitals, energy grids, everything-- can talk to each other and can make prudent decisions in real time. If you know where traffic is piling up, you can reroute it and minimize its ill effects. Or, if you can recognize where energy and resources are needed and where they aren't, and you can make adjustments accordingly, you begin to see significant energy savings overall."

Smart City has been an especially popular concept within China, where there is no shortage of big cities prime for improvement. The Chinese government recently stated a major directional shift in vision to take effect during the Twelfth Five Year Plan, with 193 cities planning to implement Smart City in some form during that period. This has led to an influx of companies planning on offering Smart City services.

The team's task, formulated by IBM, and executed with the help of Fudan professor Calvin Xu and IBM mentor Rebecca Feng, involved performing a broad market analysis on China's Smart City industry.

The team broke down the industry into seven sub-segments: health care, transportation, telecommunications, communities, energy, government, and education. They then picked the top five companies within each segment, ranked in terms of future potential, and performed individual business analyses on each firm. Then they compiled their results by segment to identify specific segment trends and future drivers.

"We based our quality criteria off three factors we believe necessary for future potential in Smart City: big data capabilities, integration, and "smart" adaptability," Evan said of their analysis. "The reality, however is that most of the industry is still very immature, with most firms having only one of the three."

Windy agreed. She followed, "The most significant weakness we saw was in information integration and adaptability. Many of these companies are going to the cloud, to Big Data, but currently lack the scale and resources to link their data sources together, making cross-communication nearly impossible. It will take some time."

Despite hitting some obstacles with the project, the team said they stayed in high spirits throughout.

"What helped us the most was that our team bonded well," Kane told us. "With difficult projects, it really helps when the team can roll with the punches and stick together." When asked how they managed to keep their spirits light, he continued, "Well for one, we didn't miss a single opportunity to pose for wacky pictures together. And now we've got ourselves quite a creative collection."

Overall, they are pleased with the project and their results. "We appreciate all the trouble Fudan and IBM went through to arrange this experience for us, and it was quite an informative experience.  And we really couldn't have done it without our faculty and company mentors."

"We hope our work will be helpful to IBM in Smart City Project," Windy added.
