On Mar. 4th, 2014, Professor Robert S. Pindyck gave Fudan 2013 IMBA students a lecture on two sessions, Deterrence via Bundling, Network Externalities and Market Structure, at Room 604, Starr building of Fudan. Professor Pindyck obtained his Bachelor and Master Degree in the field of Electrical Engineering and ph.D in the field of Economics in MIT. Besides, he received many honors and awards and has written countless works. Currently, he is Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Professor of Economics and Finance, MIT Sloan School of Management.
Referring to the first session, Deterrence via Bundling, Professor Robert S. Pindyck held the view that bundling could capture consumer surplus, help firms sell complementary products, reduce costs, deter competitors’ entry, compete with other bundles and develop tying. Citing a large number of normal but fantastic examples in our surroundings, he imposed great image on understanding the ‘Bundling’ more exactly and correctly.
During the second session, Network Externalities and Market Structure, he took abundant cases to illustrate issues such as technology adoption, rival systems, compatibility decisions, pricing-advertising-innovation, uncertainty and public policy. Particularly, three cases, ‘Philips and Sony’, ‘Blue-ray and HD-DVD’ and ‘Credit card’ were extremely impressive and led students to be deep in thought.
Generally, Professor Robert S. Pindyck gave a fabulous lecture to Fudan 2013 IMBA students. It was the first time that we could hear the voice of such a professor who are word-class scholar in the field of Economics. And we hoped that we could have an opportunity to learn more from him in the future.
