To prepare 2013 IMBA freshmen for upcoming case discussion classes, Professor Neal Hartman, a Senior Lecturer in Managerial Communication at the MIT Sloan School of Management, gave a fantastic lecture at AIA Hall, Starr Building on September 5th.
How to prepare for and participate in case discussion classes? It was the first question that Professor Neal Hartman raised in the lecture. After a brief introduction of what case discussion classes and study groups look like, Professor Neal Hartman pointed out the significance of preparation before class and gave students several advises for preparation on perspective of both individual and team. Vividly and humorously, he illustrated skills required for participating in the case discussion and practical methods to get called on by teachers.

In the second part of the lecture, he organized a model class and used a case named “Negotiation: Lost in Taiwan” for students discussion. Students discussed the problems of negotiators in this case heatedly and figured out factors needed for a successful negotiation by the guidance of Professor Neal Hartman. After that, he made debrief of the students’ performance, from which students furthered their understanding of how to contribute in a case discussion and what they should improve.
Most students deemed that the lecture left a deep impression on them and motivated them to master skills relevant for case discussion. They look forward to seeing Professor Neal Hartman in next month.
