Title: Managing Social Responsibility in Multi-Tier Supply Chains
Abstract:
Understanding and managing social responsibility in extended supply networks has emerged as one of the key managerial challenges in modern supply chain management. In this talk, we consider a three level supply chain in which a downstream buying firm must consider how to invest in the supply chain to improve its level of responsibility. The downstream buyer can choose to either delegate the management of higher tier suppliers to an intermediate supplier or to manage higher tier suppliers directly. We discuss the positives and negatives of each approach, and determine when each is optimal and how external stakeholder (consumers, NGOs, and governments) pressure influences the downstream buyer's optimal strategy and the overall level of social responsibility in the supply chain.
